The history of the Besfords

Family of Robert Besford (1752-1837) and Ann Goodfellow 

Robert Besford married Ann Goodfellow on 26th June 1788 at the Church of St. John of Beverley, St. John Lee, Northumberland. St. John Lee is located about 2 miles north of Hexham.

This was Robert’s second marriage following the death of his first wife Mary, who was buried at Chollerton, Northumberland, on 4th November 1786. Her death had left Robert with three daughters, Sarah, Mary and Martha, who at the time of their mother’s death were aged 7 (almost), 5 and 2 respectively.

Robert and Ann had two children:

John Besford, born at Cheviot Farm, Hallington, Northumberland, and baptised on 3rd May 1789 at the Church of St. John of Beverley, St. John Lee.

Robert Besford, born at Garrett Lee Farm, and baptised on 10th January 1792 at St. Helen’s Parish Church, Longhorsley, Northumberland. Garrett Lee Farm is located about 3 miles north-west of Longhorsley.
