Family of John Besford and Mary Besford (née Felton)

John Besford married Mary Felton at the Parish Church of St. Giles, Birtley, Northumberland, on 9th October 1740.  John was recorded in the Parish Register as being from the Parish of Bellingham, Northumberland, at the time of their marriage. Mary Felton was from the Parish of Birtley.

John and Mary had the following children, all of whom were baptised at St. Giles, Birtley:

Margery Besford, born at Countess Park, baptised in August 1741.

George Besford, born at Countess Park, baptised on 31st July 1743.

Elizabeth Besford, baptised in June 1747.

John Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in September 1749.

Robert Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in February 1752.

Mary Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in May 1755.

Elinder Besford, born at Birtley, baptised on 18th June 1758.

St Giles Church, Birtley
The church of St Giles in Birtley was built in the 12th century. By 1610 it was described as ‘ruynouse and lying down’. It was ‘coarsely rebuilt’ in 1723, shortly before the wedding and baptisms described above. It was restored in 1883-4 and is now Grade II*-listed on the National Heritage List for England.
