John Besford married Mary Felton at the Parish Church of St. Giles, Birtley, Northumberland, on 9^th October 1740.  John was recorded in the Parish Register as being from the Parish of Bellingham, Northumberland, at the time of their marriage. Mary Felton was from the Parish of Birtley.

John and Mary had the following children, all of whom were baptised at St. Giles, Birtley:

• George Besford, born at Countess Park, baptised on 31^st July 1743.
• Elizabeth Besford, baptised in June 1747.
• John Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in September 1749.
• Robert Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in February 1752.
• Mary Besford, born at Birtley, baptised in May 1755.
• Elinder Besford, born at Birtley, baptised on 18^th June 1758.
