George Besford was the son of John Besford and Mary Besford (née Felton). George was born in 1743 at Countess Park, a farm two miles north of Birtley, Northumberland. He was baptised at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley, on 31^st July 1743.

George Besford married Mary Dodd on 12^th May 1772 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley. His brother Robert Besford was a witness. 

George and Mary had the following children, all of whom were baptised at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley:

• Catherine Besford, baptised 7^th February 1773
• John Besford, baptised 26^th February 1775. John died in 1782. He was buried 21^st February 1782.
• Thomas Besford, baptised 4^th May 1777
• George Besford, baptised 30^th May 1779. George died on 14^th February 1804. He was buried on 16^th February 1804.
• John Besford, baptised 27^th April 1783. John died in 1784. He was buried on 18^th April 1784.
• Mary Besford baptised 10^th July 1785. Mary died on 11^th May 1801 aged 15. She was buried on 13^th May 1801.
• Elizabeth Besford, baptised 1^st May 1791
• William Besford, baptised 25^th August 1793

George Besford’s wife Mary Besford (née Dodd) died on 11^th April  1805 aged 56. She was buried on 13^th April 1805 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley.

George Besford died in 1820, aged 77. He was buried on 15^th October 1820 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley.
