The history of the Besfords

George Besford (1743-1820)

George Besford was the son of John Besford and Mary Besford (née Felton). George was born in 1743 at Countess Park, a farm two miles north of Birtley, Northumberland. He was baptised at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley, on 31st July 1743.

George Besford married Mary Dodd on 12th May 1772 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley. His brother Robert Besford was a witness. 

George and Mary had the following children, all of whom were baptised at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley:

  • Catherine Besford, baptised 7th February 1773
  • John Besford, baptised 26th February 1775. John died in 1782. He was buried 21st February 1782.
  • Thomas Besford, baptised 4th May 1777
  • George Besford, baptised 30th May 1779. George died on 14th February 1804. He was buried on 16th February 1804.
  • John Besford, baptised 27th April 1783. John died in 1784. He was buried on 18th April 1784.
  • Mary Besford baptised 10th July 1785. Mary died on 11th May 1801 aged 15. She was buried on 13th May 1801.
  • Elizabeth Besford, baptised 1st May 1791
  • William Besford, baptised 25th August 1793

George Besford’s wife Mary Besford (née Dodd) died on 11th April  1805 aged 56. She was buried on 13th April 1805 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley.

George Besford died in 1820, aged 77. He was buried on 15th October 1820 at St. Giles Parish Church, Birtley.
