William Thomas Besford was born in 1856. He worked as a miner and had two children with his wife Elizabeth, before becoming the landlord of The Waterloo Hotel on Queen Street, Amble, Northumberland.

In June 2014, a crop circle, featuring a star design, appeared in a field off Harewell Lane, in Besford.

John David Besford was born in 1883, the son of Armstrong Besford and his wife Margery Ann Besford. Armstrong Besford was born at Cramlington, Northumberland, and was the son of John Besford (1820–1875) who was killed on the viaduct at Stannington, and his wife Martha Besford (née Armstrong).

Catherine Besford worked as a general servant in a household in Bedlington. In 1903 she married Robert Gordon, a coal miner, at Gateshead Register Office.

Samuel Besford rose from valet and butler in grand households to hotelier, keeping the Three Cups at Colchester and the George at Scarborough with his wife Mary Ann, who was killed in the George Hotel fire of 1902.
