The history of the Besfords

James Besford

The earliest Besford that I have been able to trace.

James was living in Thropton at the time of his marriage to Margaret Robson. They were married at All Saints Parish Church, Rothbury, on 17th August 1679.

Their son George was born at Thropton and baptised at the same church on 5th September 1680.

All Saints Parish Church, Rothbury, as it would have looked at the time of James Besford`s marriage to Margaret Robson. The church which stands there today was rebuilt on the same site in 1850. Some of the previous building, dating from the 13th century, was retained, and the pedestal of the font once formed part of an Anglo-Saxon cross dating from around 800 AD, suggesting that the site was also a more ancient place of worship.
