Mary Turnbull was born in 1865. She married David Besford (1863–1954) in 1887. The couple had 12 children.

Janet Besford married Albert Edward Partland in 1925. In 1928, Janet gave birth to a son, also named Albert Edward Partland. The family later moved to Wakefield and Motherwell.

William was born on at Cowpen, Blyth and worked as a coal miner. In 1877, William married Jane Temple at Morpeth Register Office. The couple had one daughter.

John David Besford was born in 1883, the son of Armstrong Besford and his wife Margery Ann Besford. Armstrong Besford was born at Cramlington, Northumberland, and was the son of John Besford (1820–1875) who was killed on the viaduct at Stannington, and his wife Martha Besford (née Armstrong).

The Border Reivers were raiding families during the 15th to early 17th centuries on both sides of the border between England and Scotland.

Several Reiver family names occur in Mary Turnbull’s ancestry.

George Turnbull and Mary Barron were the parents of Mary Turnbull, who married David Besford (1863–1954) in December 1887.
