John William (Jack) Besford (1891–1975)
Jack Besford began work as a miner on his 13th birthday, and went on to become a leading trade unionist.

Besfords have held public office nearly six hundred years apart, as a Member of Parliament returned for Northampton in 1388 and as an official of the Northumberland miners in the twentieth century.
