William Thompson Besford (1899–1997)
William Besford was taken prisoner in the Second World War in 1942. He was repatriated at the end of the war.
Military
Besfords have served in the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, and one in the Union Army in the American Civil War. Most of those with articles here served in the First World War, several of them in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

The village of La Boisselle was the subject of heavy fighting during the First World War. George Besford (1893–1966) was wounded here in the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916.

Percy Robert Smith Besford, born in the Lowestoft area in 1914, was a skipper in the Royal Naval Reserve and was Mentioned in Despatches in the 1944 King’s Birthday Honours.
