Heaton

Heaton is a district of Newcastle upon Tyne 2 miles (3 km) east of the city centre, built up as a dense suburb through the nineteenth century. Parsons’ engineering works and the East Coast Main Line depot were its big employers.

George Besford’s family were living at Hotspur Street in 1898, and Charles Herbert Besford at Second Avenue in 1901.

Charles Herbert Besford

Charles Herbert Besford was working as a butcher’s boy in Heaton when the First World War broke out. He joined the Royal Navy and remained a reservist following his return to civilian life.
