George Besford (1893–1966)
George Besford was born in Amble, Northumberland. He lost his leg in the Battle of the Somme, and later worked in the lamp cabin at Woodhorn Colliery, Ashington.
Smethwick is an industrial town in the West Midlands, 4 miles (6 km) west of Birmingham city centre, known for the Soho Foundry, its glassworks and railway carriage building.
George Besford and Maud Carter were staying with her parents at 87 Runcorn Road, Smethwick, in 1921, and their son Harry was born there that October.
