Lee Besford

Lee Besford is a press and editorial photographer whose work appears in the photographic archives associated with the Sydney Morning Herald and the former Australian media group Fairfax Media. Although he maintains little public profile online, his photographs survive in major editorial image libraries such as Getty Images and Alamy, where they document everyday life, culture and news in Sydney in the early-to-mid 2000s.

Many surviving images carry captions such as “SMH Picture by Lee Besford” or credits linking them to Fairfax Media, the Australian newspaper publisher that historically owned the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Fairfax operated one of the largest newspaper photography operations in Australia. Images produced for the paper were later digitised and licensed internationally through archives now distributed by Getty Images. As a result, Besford’s photographs today appear primarily through these editorial archives rather than through a personal website or portfolio.

A portrait of Australian snowboarder Torah Bright at Manly Wharf in 2005 is one of the more visually striking photographs attributed to Besford. The image was published by the Sydney Morning Herald and is preserved in the Fairfax archive at Getty Images.
